Behavioral Expectations.
- Respect for the teacher and other students are expected at all times. Swearing, put downs, class disruptions, and tardiness are considered lack of respect.
- No projectile motion will be allowed for any objects.
- Bring your 3 ring binder, notebook paper, pen/pencil, calculator (honors chemistry) to class everyday.
- Absolutely no cell phones. They are not to be used as calculators. School policy is that if a phone rings in school, or is being used in school, I will need confiscate and parents will need to pick it up from the main office after school.
Laboratory Safety – see Science Lab Safety Rules
Class Guidelines
- Students are expected to be seated with a 3-ring binder (with 5 tabs), composition notebook, pen/pencil and highlighter when bell rings.
- The teacher may change a student’s seat at any time. This is not a punishment but an encouragement to maintain the learning environment. Failure to sit in the assigned seat is a tardy.
- Keep food, gum and drinks (except water) in your locker. These will be taken away and not returned.
- Leave electronic devices and cards in your locker. Cell phones need to be turned off. Calculator games are not allowed in class.
- Leave cosmetics, hair spray, sunglasses, hand lotion, deodorant and perfume in your locker. These will be confiscated and give to the assistant principal for parents to pick up later.
- Students are responsible for knowing and following all school rules in the student handbook. Matches, lighters, fireworks, weapons, explosive devices, or drug paraphernalia will be confiscated and give to the assistant principal. A police report will be filed.
- The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher does. Students will be excused when all seated and quiet.
Passes
- Each student will be allowed 2 bathroom passes per semester.
- Students will not receive a late pass if they do not finish tests or clean up activities before the bell.
- Tardy students need admit slip to excuse the tardy.
Attendance – See student handbook. Students need to be present when work is stamped.
- Students are considered tardy if he/she is not seated in the assigned seat when the bell rings.
- If a student is 10 or more min tardy he/she will be marked absent, with a Referral to their AP.
- After 3 tardies, the student receives a Tardy Referral detention with the AP.
Class work/ Homework = 25% of grade
- Participation is part of the class work and homework grade. Engagement and participation are important parts of any academic endeavor and students are encouraged to ask questions, comment, and bring up issues in class as relevant to the topics.
- Class work is written on the composition notebook. These will be stamped daily, collected and graded at the end of the unit.
- Save all homework, reports and projects on a computer and back it up on another disk. (Computers can sense your stress level, so I encourage you to print your work early.)
- Work submitted via email will be vary by assignment.
- Students have a minimum of 45 min of homework daily. Check web page for agendas and homework. Plan to use the school or public library and know the hours of operation. Get a library card. A dictionary, the Internet and other resources are used frequently.
- Homework is collected or stamped at the beginning of the period. Late work will not be accepted. Students should do the work and include it in the final Unit Portfolio.
Labs = 25% of grade
- Lab notes will be taken in notebook but final reports will be typed up. Students know how these are formatted.
- Each member of the group will be required to turn in a lab report.
Tests, Quizzes and Projects = 50% of grade
- There is a unit test approximately every 2 or 3 weeks.
- There is a cumulative final exam at the end of each semester.
Make Up Work
- The students are responsible to check assignments and homework with their “buddies”. Phone numbers and emails should be exchanged early on in the semester. Buddies are also responsible for collecting extra handouts for their partners when they are absent. Extra handouts will be available in the Resource Bin.
- Make up work is accepted for excused absences only, not for cuts or suspensions.
- Quizzes can be made up during tutorial.
- If students are absent more than 2 days, parents should notify the counseling office and arrange to pick up the students work. Students are encouraged to share phone numbers with their lab partners and buddies.
- Students may copy class notes from each other, but not lab conclusions, homework or projects.
Tutorial
- Student sign the Tutorial sign in sheet when they arrive for tutorial.
- It is the student’s responsibility to come to tutorial after an absence.
- Some labs can be made up during tutorial, make arrangement with the teacher in advance.
- Tutorial is a good time to meet with your study groups, finish projects, ask questions and review for tests.
Academic Integrity
- Cheating is absolutely banned in my classroom. Students who cheat will receive an automatic 0 for the test or assignment. See Student handbook for consequences.
